LAICAnSat

The LAICAnSat is the first self retrievable high altitude balloonsat developed by the University of Brasília. The primary mission objective is the esign, building and launch of a high altitude platform, equipped with several sensors and payloads (e.g. cameras for Earth imaging), for testing aerospace systems and conducting scientific experiments in the atmosphere. Another goal of this project is the study of trajectory control systems for safely landing the platform in a predefined area. In this project, students have the possibility to work on a complex system, similar to a spacecraft, and to fly it several times. In August 2017, the LAICAnSat platform was flown in the US to film the solar eclipse from the stratosphere in the framework of the NASA's Space Grant Ballooning Project, with the mission Kuaray. This project is currently funded by the Brazilian CNPq with the Universal program (title of the project 'Estudo e Desenvolvimento de um Sistema de Guiamento para o projeto LAICAnSat').

Attitude determination and control systems

The study of attitude determination and control systems (ADCS) is conducted in a laboratory equipped with a dedicated facility consisting of an air-bearing table and an Helmholtz cage. This allows to simulate the frictionless attitude motion conditions of a spacecraft and to reply the Earth magnetic field in orbit. The system is equipped with sensors (IMU, magnetometers) and actuators (gas jet, reaction wheels, magnetorquers). In this project, students have the possibility to work on all the parts of an ADCS, from the design and implementation of algorithms on a real Cubesat on-board computer to the realization of new actuators and sensors.
